What does it mean to move through digital space? What is its connection to physical space? What is the role of time?
Manifest Destiny explores the Google Street View with a simple premise, go from Plymouth, Massachusetts to the Pacific Ocean… in Street View. The browser-based performance takes 48 hours. Viewers can join at any time during those 48 hours and will be placed along the route accordingly. The piece attempts to invoke a cinematic experience by establishing a different relationship to a tool we are all accustomed to using: we become passengers of Street View rather than navigators.
The work is also a critique of Google and their expansion of the digital frontier.
This work is part of my MFA thesis, Playing Outside.
